The density of a substance can be described
in three forms – the mass density (p) and the weight density
(D). The other method of expressing density of a substance
is dimensionless and is the ratio of the density of the
substance to the density of water (distilled water).
This ratio is known as Specific Gravity (sp.gr.), although
it actually represents the relative density of a substance
to the density of water. The use of the word “gravity” is
misleading, because the effect of gravity is of no consequence
on the specific gravity of a substance.
Quality Hydrometers are manufactured to meet the requirements
of ASTM E 100. Calibrations are performed in accordance
with ASTM E 126, Standard Test Method for Inspection and Verification of Hydrometers.
InnoCal provides in-house calibration services for a wide variety of specific gravity
instrumentation. All specific gravity measurements are traceable to NIST.
